Sr Dolores

Sr. Dolores Sheehan
Sr. Dolores Sheehan was born in Butte, Montana on June 1, 1936. Butte was at that time an Irish mining town, although other groups lived in town as well. Her parents were Daniel and Agnes Sheehan. Dolores has a younger brother who was born about 2 years later. Tim now lives in Fort Collins Colorado with his wife, Marlene. Their children and 8 grandchildren also live in Colorado. Dolores’ sister, Judy, was born another 2 years later. She lives in Missoula, Montana with her husband, Bob. They have 3 children and 5 grandchildren. Dolores’ father was a lineman for the Montana Power Company and died in a job accident when she was 7 years old. This was difficult for all the family emotionally and financially. Dolores went to Catholic grade schools and a Catholic high school in Butte. After high school, she entered the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth at age 18. Dolores had some college classes and started teaching primary grades in l956. She taught in several grade schools in Missouri, Montana, Wyoming and California for about 12 years. Dolores then proceeded to do Social Work in 2 different residential centers for children and 3 different Catholic Social Services in 3 different States. She was in Brownsville, Texas for about 10 years where she worked with Catholic Social Services and later with Brownsville Community Health Center. Dolores did training of parish St. Vincent de Paul workers in the Diocese and helped develop education programs for women in sewing, cake decorating, cosmetology and floral decorating. With these skills some of the women went on to develop cottage industries. Dolores helped develop a promotora program for Brownsville Community Health Clinic. Dolores learned to speak Spanish while she was working with Brownsville and she has worked primarily with this population since then in Missouri. In 1994 Dolores asked the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth for a Leave of Absence and 6 years later, on the feast of the Transfiguration, was dispensed from her vows.
